The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question about the current rate of suicides among remand prisoners and the rest of the prison population.The number of self-inflicted deaths to date in 1996 is 25. Twelve of these were deaths of sentenced prisoners and thirteen were prisoners on remand. The inquests have not yet taken place into any of these deaths and I am therefore unable to confirm any verdicts.
