Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what were the numbers for the(a) male, (b) female and (c) total prison population in England and Wales for the last day in each of the past 24 months; and if he will make a statement. [28241]

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Butler to Mr. Alex Carlile, dated 8 May 1996: The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question asking, what were the numbers for the (a) male, (b) female and (c) total prison population in England and Wales for the last day in each of the past 24 months; and if he will make a statement.
