Mr. Gordon Prentice

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will hold a public inquiry into the matters raised by Castle Cement in its appeal against the Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution directions concerning the plant at Clitheroe. [27340]

Mr. Clappison

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State has informed Castle Cement and the Environment Agency that he intends the appeal case to proceed by means of a public hearing. Details of the hearing will in due course be advertised locally, and interested parties will be able to submit evidence to the Secretary of State's inspector.
