HC Deb 07 May 1996 vol 277 cc72-3W
Mr. Congdon

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the outcome of the meeting of the United Kingdom round table on sustainable development held on 25 April; and if he will make a statement. [28295]

Mr. Gummer

At its 25 April meeting, the round table approved a report on defining a sustainable transport sector, which will be published shortly. It also had a preliminary discussion with my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Transport about the Green Paper "Transport—The Way Forward" published that day. The meeting agreed to begin work on four new projects:

  • intermodal transport, both passenger and freight;
  • land use planning controls over energy developments;
  • water resources; and
  • housing and sustainability.

On 19 April, the round table published its first annual report. This describes all the work that is completed or under way.
