Mr. Nigel Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list the number of young people aged 16 years and above who left local authority care(a) in the 12 months ending December 1994, (b) in the 12 months ending December 1995 and (c) for the last 12 month period for which statistics are available; if he will provide a breakdown by (i) the legal status of those young people immediately prior to leaving the care of the local authority and (ii) the length of time in continuous care, by legal status; and if he will make a statement. The latest figures available centrally are for the financial year ending 31 March 1994 and are shown in the table.

Children Act 1989 on or after their 16 birthday, and for whom local authorities have a continuing duty to provide advice, assistance and befriending up to the age of at least 21 years, pursuant to section 24 of the said Act, by local authority area in each year for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement.
