To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, pursuant to his answer of 18 March,Official Report, column 11, what rents were paid for the various buildings rented by the European Parliament in (a) Strasbourg, (b) Brussels and (c) Luxembourg; and if he will indicate the floor areas of the buildings, the purposes for which they are used, and the nature of any applicable rent reviews. The Palais de 1'Europe in Strasbourg and the D2 building in Brussels contain debating chambers for plenary sessions of the European Parliament. Other buildings contain offices and meeting rooms.

The figures for rent also include property tax. The rentals are calculated over 12 months on the basis of existing leases. They are not subject to periodic review, but the leases provide for indexing to the cost of living, or to construction costs.
