HC Deb 20 March 1996 vol 274 c202W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement concerning care in the community in Wales. [21128]

Mr. Richards

Many more people are now being cared for in their own homes or in a homely environment in their local community. On the basis of figures supplied by the local authorities, in 1993–94 local authorities assessed 51,000 people for community care services and an estimated 30,000 were provided with care to help them stay in their own homes. In 1994–95 these increased to 66,000 and 32,000 respectively.

The unitary authorities will be even better placed to co-ordinate the range of care and support that vulnerable people need.
