To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was spent on(a) road infrastructure in Scotland, (b) new roads and road improvements and (c) road maintenance in Scotland at outturn prices in each year between 1975 and 1995. [19302]

1. Capital expenditure includes new roads and improvements on all roads; and structural maintenance on trunk roads. Current expenditure includes routine and winter maintenance on all roads; and road lighting and structural maintenance on local authority roads. Other expenditure includes administration, car parks, road safety, traffic management and surveys.

2. Minor changes in the classification of expenditure have occurred during the above period.
