To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what consultations he has had with the chairmen of the NHS trusts in Wales concerning mergers of trusts; what representations he has received from trusts concerning proposed(a) mergers and (b) takeovers, and if he will make a statement. [21058]

None. It is for the trust and health authorities themselves in the first instance to agree proposals which can demonstrate improved patient care. I would consider such proposals if they were put to me.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is the external financing limit for the(a) total and (b) individual borrowings of national health service trusts in Wales. [21061]

The total external financing limit in 1995–96 is £57.016 million. Information on long-term borrowing of individual NHS trusts in Wales in this financial year is shown in the following table:
