HC Deb 18 March 1996 vol 274 cc78-9W
Ms Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what estimate he has made of the total number of people with mental health problems requiring 24-hour care in each of the last five years. [20857]

Mr. Bowis

For working purposes in producing the report "24-hour nursed care for people with severe and enduring mental illness", the average prevalence for people requiring such care was estimated at one per 10,000 members of the national population, although there will be significant variations between districts.

Mr. David Atkinson

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to his oral statement of 20 February,Official Report, column 175, if he will make a statement on the provision of crisis accommodation for mentally-ill people; for whom it is intended; how it will be staffed; and which authority will provide it. [21007]

Mr. Bowis

The provision of crisis accommodation forms one part of a spectrum of care for those who are unable to cope, and should be purchased by every health authority. It could be provided by a range of statutory or independent providers, in a variety of settings, which would include hostels or supported housing.

Ms Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients aged 16 to 64 years have been readmitted to the care of a psychiatric specialist within 90 days of discharge in each of the last five years(a) by health authority, (b) by regional health authority and (c) nationally. [20881]
