To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what percentage of(a) men and (b) women in Wales aged 15 to 20 years smoke; and if he will make a statement. [18607]

Mr. Richards

The 1994 Welsh youth health survey shows that in the 15 to 16 age group, 26 per cent. of males and 34 per cent. of females smoke at least occasionally. The 1993 Health in Wales shows that in the 18 to 20 age group 28 per cent. of male and 25 per cent. of females smoke at least occasionally. No survey has included 17-year-olds.
