To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many students of higher education received(a) mandatory awards and (b) discretionary awards from Mid Glamorgan county council in (i) 1995, (ii) 1993 and (iii) 1991; and if she will make a statement. [17559]

In the academic year 1993–94, the latest year for which data are available, Mid Glamorgan local education authority made 6,620 new and continuing mandatory awards and 50 discretionary awards to higher education students. Corresponding figures for the academic year 1991–92 were 5,120 mandatory awards and 170 discretionary awards.
