Mrs. Anne Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what(a) treatments and (b) therapies are made available to convicted rapists whilst they are in prison. [17920]

Miss Widdecombe

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the temporary Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from A. J. Pearson to Mrs. Anne Campbell, dated 4 March 1996:

The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question about treatments and therapies available to convicted rapists.

Since 1992 the Prison Service has been running a cognitive behavioural treatment programme for sex offenders, which is open to both rapists and child abusers. The programme is run in 22 prisons which provide treatment for about 500 prisoners a year.
