Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will estimate the number of applicants against the available places on the community work programme at the latest available date; and if he will make a statement. [18078]

Mr. Ancram

Responsibility for the subject in question has been delegated to the Training and Employment Agency under its chief executive, Mr Ian Walters. I have asked him to arrange for the reply to be given.

letter from Ian Walters to Dr. Norman A. Godman, dated 1 March 1996:

The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland has asked me as Chief Executive of the Training and Employment Agency to reply to your question about applicants for the pilot Community Work Programme.

At 23 February 1996, the Partnerships established to manage the pilot Community Work Programme had received 708 applications for the 1,000 places targeted. At the same date 509 places were filled.

I hope that you find this reply useful.
