The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General, to reply to your recent Question about secure establishments in England and Wales in which young people may be held on remand or awaiting sentence.There are 25 secure units in England, and two in Wales, approved respectively by the Secretary of State for Health and the Secretary of State for Wales for the purpose of restricting the liberty of children in the care of local authorities.These 27 local authority secure units and their location are as follows:
