Mr. Pike

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what estimate he has made of the current number of children aged over 16 and under 19 years for whom child benefit(a) is and (b) is not payable who are taking (i) non-advanced courses and (ii) advanced courses, broken down as far as possible by the type of course. [30241]

Mr. Andrew Mitchell

The information is not available in the format requested.

Data are not available on the nature of the education being undertaken by children for whom child benefit is in payment. However, child benefit is payable beyond age 16 only where the child is undergoing full-time non-advanced education. Benefit is not payable for children undergoing advanced education, defined as courses above A-level or equivalent.
