To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what estimate he has made of the numbers(a) employed and (b) in training as (i) health visitors, (ii) school nurses, (iii) district nurses and (iv) community psychiatric nurses; [36711]

(2)how many whole-time equivalent (a) health visitors, (b) school nurses, (c) district nurses and (d) community psychiatric nurses were in training in each region in September of each year since 1990 broken down by (i) gender and (ii) ethnic origin; [36710]

(3) how many whole-time equivalent (a) health visitors, (b) school nurses, (c) district nurses and (d) community psychiatric nurses were employed in each region in September of each year since 1990 broken down by (i) gender and (ii) ethnic origin. [36705]

[holding answer 11 July 1996]: Information on numbers of health visitors, school nurses, district nurses, and community psychiatric nurses employed by region and gender will be placed in the Library. Information about their ethnic origin is not available centrally.

Such information as is available on the numbers in training is contained in the English National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting's annual report for 1995–96 which was presented to Parliament on 22 July.
