Mr. Harvey

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what plans the Government have to review the local government superannuation scheme, with particular reference to the payment of a full spouse's pension to the person to whom the contributor was married at the date of death; [40027]

(2) what is the estimated cost of extending the provisions of the 1978 amendments to the local government superannuation scheme to those who are currently receiving LGSS pensions and who retired prior to 1978. [40028]

Sir Paul Beresford

As I announced to the House on 22 July,Official Report, column27, we have decided to adopt the proposals for the future of the local government pension scheme on which we consulted earlier this year. Within the framework of these proposals, we are continuing to assess, including the cost implications, a number of possible scheme improvements, including the payment of pensions for post-retirement marriages. It is our intention to announce the outcome of these assessments as part of the proposed consultation on the new draft regulations to which I referred in my 22 July announcement.
