HC Deb 24 July 1996 vol 282 c540W
Mr. Spring

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the pattern of house price movements in the past 12 months. [37672]

Mrs. Angela Knight

Over the 12 months to June, national average house prices—as measured by the Halifax index—rose by 4 per cent. The disaggregated figures show that house prices have risen in all regions of the UK over this period. Rising living standards, low inflation and the lowest mortgage rates for nearly 30 years mean that the conditions are right for the recovery in the housing market to be sustained.
