HC Deb 24 July 1996 vol 282 cc398-9W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the number of hospital beds available for use in each Welsh health authority in each year since 1979; and if he will make a statement. [39092]

Mr. Hague

The information is given in the following table. Data for NHS trusts are included within the health authority area in which the trust was situated. The changes in bed numbers reflect shorter hospital stays and more patients requiring long-term care being treated in the community. Over the same period of time the number of in-patients and day cases admitted to hospitals in Wales has almost doubled.
