To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he made during the Maastricht requirements are adhered to rests with the head of the recruitment branch. The recruitment process forms part of the regular programme of inspection by GCHQ's internal audit unit. The recruitment office was inspected by the civil service commissioners in 1993.

The table gives details of the number of staff applying and recruited and the overall percentages at each grade during the calendar year 1995. Some candidates recruited in 1995 will be joining the Department within the calendar year 1996.

[holding answer 18 July 1996]: Protocol No. 1 to the European Community treaty deals with an issue which is specific to Denmark. The UK Government had no objection to it.
