I have received many positive representations from residents of towns and villages wanting bypasses and from representatives of motoring organisations and the road haulage industry.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many new bypasses were constructed between(a) 1979 and 1991 and (b) 1991 and 1996. [39294]

I have asked the chief executive of the Highways Agency to write to the hon. Member.

Letter from Lawrie Haynes to Ms Glenda Jackson, dated 24 July 1996: The Secretary of State for Transport has asked me to reply to your recent question about how many new bypasses were constructed between (a) 1979 and 1991 and (b) 1991 and 1996. The number of new bypasses opened between 1979 and 1991 was 120, and between 1991 and 1996, 53.
