To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if the bridge strengthening programme will be completed by 1999; and if it will be necessary to impose weight restrictions on strategically important bridges. [39265]

The bridge strengthening programme will continue for a number of years after 1999. We do not envisage that it will be necessary to impose weight restrictions on strategically important bridges.
