Mr. George Howarth

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list (i) the latest available figures, (ii) the figures for 1992, (iii) those for 1988 and (iv) those for 1987 for(a) the prisoner-on-prisoner assault rates and (b) prisoner-on-staff assault rates, for each category C prison. [38746]

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Pearson to Mr. George Howarth, dated 22 July 1996The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question asking for assault rates in each category C prison. Provisional figures for 1995–96 are shown in the attached table. Statistics for assaults in each Prison Service establishment are published each year in 'Statistics of offences against prison discipline and punishments England and Wales'. The latest edition for 1995 (Cm.3316) and earlier editions are available in the Library.
