To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what was(a) the target and (b) the actual intake for teachers in (i) primary and (ii) secondary schools, broken down into subjects, in each year from 1990–91, with such figures as are available for 1996–97. [37782]

[holding answer 18 July 1996]: The number of teachers who entered teaching in mainstream nursery, primary and secondary schools in England and Wales for the first time each year from 1990–91 to 1993–94 are given in the table. The Secretary of State does not set targets for entrants into teaching.
