HC Deb 19 July 1996 vol 281 c679W
Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what steps he plans to improve the helicopter search and rescue coverage in the Dover strait. [38556]

Mr. Norris

Following publication of the interdepartmental helicopter review group report, formal consultations are being held on, among other things, the location of the two Coastguard search and rescue aircraft on the south coast. The aim is to provide the optimum helicopter availability to meet the search and rescue requirements along the south coast including the Dover strait and mid-channel. We will await the outcome of those consultations before any decisions are made.

Mr. Salmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what negotiations he(a) has had and (b) proposes to have with Shell (UK) regarding the continued operation of its offshore-based helicopter used for air rescue; and if he will make a statement. [38445]

Mr. Norris

There have been no negotiations with Shell (UK) and none are planned. The helicopter referred to has been provided by Shell Expro as an additional service and is not a declared UK search and rescue facility. Local discussions have taken place with Shell Expro about the effects of its decision, and the extra cover it will make available for night medical emergencies.
