To ask the President of the Board of Trade what has been the average annual increase since 1972 in output per head in(a) manufacturing and (b) non-manufacturing in (i) the United Kingdom and (ii) Germany. [37486]

For the UK. the average annual increase since 1972 in output per person employed is 1.8 per cent. for manufacturing industries and 3.2 per cent. for the whole economy. Comparable information for Germany is not available.
