HC Deb 19 July 1996 vol 281 c678W
Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what items are presently on the agenda of the marine environment protection committee at the International Maritime Organisation; and what is Her Majesty's Government's policy in respect of each of them. [37567]

Mr. Norris

I have asked the chief executive of the Marine Safety Agency to write to the hon. Member.

Letter from R. M. Bradley to Mr. Jim Cousins, dated 19 July 1996: The Secretary of State for Transport has asked me to reply to your Question about items that are presently on the agenda of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) at the IMO. The provisional work programme of MEPC was discussed at the Committee's recent meeting earlier this month. An agenda, as such, does not exist at present, but a list of the issues under consideration is attached to this letter. We take a positive approach to MEPC's work, intended to enhance the prevention and control of marine pollution. Our policy on a number of these issues is reflected in the recent United Kingdom contributions to the Committee, which are also included for your information.
