HC Deb 19 July 1996 vol 281 cc695-6W
Mr. Sutcliffe

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the implementation of the proposal of the United Nations Secretary-General for a United Nations contingency force for Burundi. [38247]

Mr. Hanley

Contingency planning on Burundi is continuing in New York arid in the sub-regional area. The most likely option appears to be a sub-regional peacekeeping force, though it is not yet clear on what terms. We are considering how we might help with planning.

Mr. Sutcliffe

To ask the Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on plans for the expansion fo the international criminal tribunal for Rwanda to enable it to prosecute in Burundi. [38250]

Mr. Hanley

We are not aware of any initiative within the UN to expand the remit of the international criminal tribunal for Rwanda to include Burundi.

Any extension of the Rwanda tribunal's mandate would require a Security Council resolution.
