The labour force survey produces unemployment figures based on the internationally standard definition of unemployment recommended by the International Labour Organisation. The LFS shows that in winter 1995–96 the rates of ILO unemployment in the Newcastle and South Tyneside borough council areas were 11.3 per cent. and 15.6 per cent. respectively. This represents the extent of the available information.
