HL Deb 16 July 1996 vol 574 c55WA
Baroness Hooper

asked Her Majesty's Government:

In how many schools in the United Kingdom Spanish is taught, in how many schools no teacher of Spanish is available and how many students are taking GCSE Spanish.

The Minister of State, Department for Education and Employment (Lord Henley)

Information on the numbers of schools or teachers teaching Spanish in the United Kingdom is not collected centrally. Last year, nearly 40,000 school students were entered for GCSE or SCE standard grade examinations in Spanish in the United Kingdom.
