HC Deb 11 July 1996 vol 281 cc317-8W
Mr. Nigel Evans

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland when he received the annual report of the Standing Advisory Commission on Human Rights; and if he will make a statement. [37483]

Sir Patrick Mayhew

The report for the period 1 April 1995 to 31 March 1996 has been published today and copies have been laid before Parliament.

The Commission has undertaken a heavy programme of work in the past year, playing an active role in the shaping of legislation and policy, and commenting on the Government's record in meeting their international human rights obligations. In addition, it is carrying out an exceptionally demanding research commitment in connection with the employment equality review. The thorough, challenging and independent advice it offers plays a significant part in the protection of human rights in Northern Ireland.

Copies of my response to the report will also be placed in the Library in due course.
