§ Mr. Heathcoat-Amory[holding answer 10 July 1996]: Customs keep the number of staff required for this work under close review. At 31 March 1996 there were some 252 staff engaged on single market excise work, most of whom were excise verification officers. For the current financial year an increase of 20 EVO posts has been made.
