HC Deb 10 July 1996 vol 281 c218W
28. Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he(a) has made to and (b) received from, the Government of Sudan since the signing of the peace charter in Sudan. [35189]

Mr. Hanley

I discussed the political charter and other matters with the Sudanese ambassador on 2 July.

We look to all sides in the Sudanese civil war to make genuine moves towards peace.

Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations have been made by Her Majesty's Government on the incidence of female genital mutilation in the north of Sudan. [36171]

Sir Nicholas Bonsor

We have made no formal representations to the Government of Sudan on this subject.

At the last session of the UN Commission for Human Rights, in April 1996, the United Kingdom co-sponsored a resolution which stressed the obligations of states to enact and enforce legislation against the perpetrators of acts such as female genital mutilation.
