HC Deb 08 July 1996 vol 281 c1W
Mr. Liew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the admission of Iraq to membership of the United Nation conference on disarmament on 17 June. [35927]

Mr. David Davis

We welcome the decision by the conference on disarmament on 17 June to admit a further 23 states as members. This brings the total membership to 61.

The United Kingdom has long favoured the widest possible membership of the CD in order to promote universal adherence to arms control treaties.

Iraq is one of the new members.
