HC Deb 08 July 1996 vol 281 c44W
Mr. Win Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what were the drop-out rates in higher education in(a) year one, (b) year two and (c) year three—for four-year courses—and the failure rate in the final year of a first degree or its equivalent in the last three years. [34848]

Mr. Jonathan Evans

Information relating to drop-out rates is not collected centrally. Data collected by the higher education statistics agency—HESA—from academic year 1994–95 will allow us to calculate drop out rates in future years. The rate of final year student failures at first degree level in higher education in Wales over the last three years may be found in the following table. Information relating to the University of Wales for earlier years and data for the 1994–95 academic year are not available.

Failure Rates of Students at First Degree Level in Higher Education in Wales (excluding the University of Wales)
Rate per thousand
1991–92 6
1992–93 6
1993–94 3
