HC Deb 08 July 1996 vol 281 cc3-4W
Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has recently made to, or received from, the signatories of the Lusaka agreement about the political and military situation in Angola. [35590]

Mr. Hanley

My right hon. and noble Friend Baroness Chalker has recently had talks with the Prime Minister, the Secretary General of the MPLA and the Angolan army chief of staff. The Minister saw Dr. Savimbi during her visit to Angola in February. The British ambassador in Luanda is in frequent contact with senior representatives of the Lusaka signatories. At every opportunity we continue to press for an early and successful conclusion to the peace process.

Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make representations to the Angolan Government and other relevant agencies and authorities about the conditions in the UNITA quartering camps. [35589]

Mr. Hanley

We are aware of complaints by UNITA about conditions in some of the quartering areas. These are the responsibility of the United Nations authorities who monitor the situation on the ground. Our embassy in Luanda is in touch with the relevant organisations.
