HC Deb 08 July 1996 vol 281 c55W
Mr. Welsh

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the number of deaths in Scotland caused by(a) smoking-related diseases and (b) alcohol-related diseases in each year since 1990. [35673]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

[holding answer 4 July 1996]: It is not possible to be precise, but the available information is as follows.

In 1992 it was estimated that some 10,600 people in Scotland die each year from smoking-related diseases, including lung cancer, coronary heart disease and stroke.

In some 850 cases a year, the cause of death recorded on the death certificate is a disease identified as being alcohol-related, but alcohol plays a part in the deaths of many more people through its contribution, for example, to violence and road accidents.
