§ Mr. Arbuthnot[holding answer 26 June 1996]: During the 1980s, atomic weapons establishment Aldermaston participated in a number of studies involving the use of radioactive material. Some were also conducted at Porton Down in the 1950s and 1960s, and are described in an answer I gave the hon. Member for South Shields (Dr. Clark) on 25 June 1996, Official Report, column 65. Follow-up radiological monitoring would have been irrelevant because only very short-lived radioisotopes were used in the experiments.
