Mr. Bowis

The work of the social services inspectorate—SSI—is described fully in the annual reports of the chief inspector, copies of which are available in the Library. In the regions, the SSI is primarily concerned with promoting departmental policy on the provision of social services, and monitoring and reporting on the work of social services departments. It is not part of its normal duties to report to Ministers on individual cases.

Since 1990, the inspectorate has carried out a number of formal inspections across the range of children's and adult services in each of the five metropolitan districts in West Yorkshire. Reports of these inspections are publicly available. Information on inspections carried out before 1990 is not available.
