To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will list the trade missions to(a) Burma and (b) Nigeria over the last five years which have been sponsored by his Department and organised in conjunction with his Department; how many are planned; and if he will list the companies involved. [12238]

Mr. Oppenheim

(a) There have been no Department of Trade and Industry-supported trade missions to Burma in the last five years. The Department is supporting two missions in 1996:

  1. (1) an Asia Pacific Advisory Group trade mission, 26 February-1 March 1996, and
  2. (2) a British Electrochemical and Allied Manufacturers' Association (BEAMA) trade mission to Thailand and Burma, 24 June-3 July 1996.

(b) Since 1991, there have been 15 Department of Trade and Industry-supported trade missions to Nigeria:

  1. (1) April 1991—Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce and Industry
  2. (2) August 1991—Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry

  8. (7) October 1992—British Electrochemical and Allied Manufacturers' Association (BEAMA)
  9. (8) April 1993—Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce and Industry
  10. (9) June 1993—Bristol Chamber of Commerce and Industry
  11. (10) January 1994—London Chamber of Commerce and Industry
  12. (11) September 1994—Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry
  13. (12) January 1995—British Electrochemical and Allied Manufacturers' Association (BEAMA)
  14. (13) May 1995—Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry
  15. (14) May 1995—DTI Nigeria desk-organised water trade mission
  16. (15) September 1995—Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Several of these missions also visited Ghana.

The Department of Trade and Industry has undertaken to support two missions in 1996:

  1. (1) a London Chamber of Commerce mission to Nigeria and Ghana, 25 February-15 March, and
  2. (2) a Kent Chamber of Commerce mission to Nigeria and Ghana, 17–30 November.
