To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many civilian Ministry of Defence jobs there are within a 25-mile radius of(a) Bath and (b) Cheadle. [11258]

The following points should be noted:

  1. (1) the records from which this data have been obtained do not differentiate between the various divisions and management companies within the GEC-Marconi Ltd. group.
  2. (2) where a contract was current in two or more financial years, it is included in the figures for each year concerned.
  3. (3) the figures do not include any contracts placed by Defence agencies since they took over their own contract administration.

I regret that the figures before 1990 are not immediately available and the information could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

The number of MOD civil servants employed within a 25-mile radius of(a) Bath and (b) Cheadle was 8,674 and 600 respectively on 1 April 1995.
