HC Deb 22 January 1996 vol 270 cc81-2W
Mr. Spearing

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what are the total receipts to local government from the sale of their homes for rent; by whom the balances are now held; and what is(a) the amount and (b) the proportion of these receipts that has been used to write off local authority debt. [9861]

Mr. Clappison

Total receipts to local government from the sale of local authority dwelling since 1971–72 are about £23 billion. Most of these receipts will have been used to repay debt or for new capital expenditure, but no breakdown is available relating to housing receipts. Unused amounts remain with the authorities that received them.
