HC Deb 19 January 1996 vol 269 c808W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what proposals he has to review the need to issue annual reminders to motorists to have MOTs as part of his policy to reduce pollution from cars; and if he will make a statement. [10412]

Mr. Norris

We have no plans to review the need for mandatory annual MOT reminders. I believe that the benefits would be minimal: motorists already receive an annual vehicle excise duty reminder and cannot at that stage relicense their vehicles without a current MOT test certificate.

We are, however, exploring in the context of MOT computerisation the matter of garages being able voluntarily to issue MOT reminders.
