To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what proposals he has to compensate people employed in the fishing industry who become unemployed because of a reduction in fish quotas from 1995 to 1996. [8385]

I have already announced that £24 million is available for decommissioning fishing vessels in 1996 and 1997.

In addition, under the PESCA initiative, which is designed to address the problems facing the fishing industry, up to £71 million of European and UK national or regional aid will be available until the end of 1999 for projects including the diversification and retraining in fishery dependent areas.
