HC Deb 15 January 1996 vol 269 cc385-7W
Mr. Morgan

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will establish an inquiry into the changes in(a) the perinatal, (b) the neonatal and (c) the infant mortality rates in Wales between 1993 and 1994. [9527]

Mr. Hague

No. Despite an increase of 14 deaths between 1993 and 1994 the trend is still clearly downward.

Mr. Morgan

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) what information he has on perinatal, neonatal and infant mortality rates in other European countries in 1993 and 1994; [9524]

(2) what research he has (a) commissioned and (b) evaluated on the use of perinatal, neonatal and infant mortality rates in other European countries as comparators for the Welsh statistics; and if he will make a statement. [9523]

Mr. Hague

The information is contained in the following tables, taken from "Demographic Statistics 1995" published by Eurostat. A copy of this document is available in the Library of the House. No figures are available for 1994.

I have not commissioned or evaluated research on the use of perinatal, neonatal and infant mortality rates in other European countries as comparators for the Welsh statistics. However, comparisons of infant mortality rates between the United Kingdom and other countries are compiled, evaluated and published by the appropriate international organisation, in particular the World Health Organisation and Eurostat.

The figures published for Wales in "Health Statistics Wales" show that despite a small increase in deaths between 1993 and 1994 the trend is still clearly downward. The increase last year may not in itself be significant, although we do keep the situation under review.

The figures from 1990–94 show an overall reduction in the rate of infant mortality—the number of deaths per 1,000 live births—from 6.9 to 6.1. The figures published by various international organisations indicate that this is one of the lowest rates in Europe, and a figure of which Wales should be proud.

Mr. Morgan

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what information he has on the(a) perinatal, (b) neonatal and (c) infant mortality rates in Wales in (i) the first quarter and (ii) the first half of 1995; and if he will place that information in the Library. [9528]

Mr. Hague

The information, provided by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys, is in the following table. All the data are provisional:

First quarter of 1995 First half of 1995
Perinatal mortality rate (per 1,000 live and still births) 7.3 7.0
Neonatal mortality rate (per 1,000 live births) 3.9 3.6
Infant mortality rate (per 1,000 live births) 6.0 5.4
