To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how much has been spent on motorway and major trunk road construction in each of the past four years. at constant prices. [7458]

Expenditure on motorway and trunk road construction at constant 1995–96 prices in each of the past four complete years has been as follows:

  • 1991–92: £1.44 billion
  • 1992–93: £1.40 billion
  • 1993–94: £1.41 billion
  • 1994–95: £1.36 billion.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement on the progress in the design, build, finance and operate programme for trunk road development. [7459]

I am delighted to announce that we signed the first DBFO project for A69 Carlisle-Newcastle on Friday 12 January. We have received robust bids on time for the second tranche and we announced a third tranche as part of the public expenditure settlement in November, bringing the total value of DBFO projects to over £1 billion.
