HC Deb 15 January 1996 vol 269 cc394-5W
Mr. Stewart

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what assessment he has made of the consequences for Scotland of a move to central European time; and if he will make a statement. [8097]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

Scottish Office statisticians have over the last 12 months undertaken substantial work to examine the likely effect of a move to CET on accident casualties. Preliminary results, which will be published shortly, will show that a change to CET would be broadly neutral in terms of the total number of road accident casualties in Scotland. The work is based on up-to-date analysis of Scottish accident data over a recent five-year period. It takes account of prevailing light conditions at over 20 locations in Scotland and the time of day when accidents took place.
