HC Deb 11 January 1996 vol 269 c307W
Mr. Rowlands

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many apprentices under the new apprenticeship scheme have received bursaries; and what proportion this represents of the total number. [7746]

Mr. Richards

A total of 498 young people started modern apprenticeships in manufacturing engineering in Wales in 1994–95. Of these, 188 or 37.75 per cent. were in receipt of a bursary. A total of 1,780 young people have commenced modern apprenticeships so far in 1995–96. Of these, 75 or 4.2 per cent. are in receipt of a bursary.

Bursaries are available, for the first year of training only, to young people following modern apprenticeships in manufacturing engineering who are attending college on a full-time basis and who are non-employed.
