To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list the number of firms which(a) registered and (b) deregistered for VAT each year since 1979 in each parliamentary constituency. [7553]

I have been asked to reply.

There are no available figures on the number of VAT registrations and deregistrations by parliamentary constituency. Annual estimates of registrations and deregistrations for local authority districts are published in "VAT Registration and Deregistrations, County and District Analyses 1980–1991" and "VAT Registrations and Deregistrations, County and District Analyses 1992–93". Copies of these are in the Library of the House.

The estimates include adjustments for the effects of the changes in the VAT threshold in 1991 and 1993, and hence differ from those published elsewhere by HM Customs and Excise.
